Code of Conduct

Code of Conduct

The Commission on Volcanogenic Sediments (CVS) is a subdivision of the International Association of Volcanology and Chemistry of the Earth’s Interior (IAVCEI) and thus follows their statutes and by-laws (https://www.iavceivolcano.org/about-iavcei/statute-and-by-laws.html).

CVS is a representation of the global volcanology community and thus has a duty and obligation to provide a safe and welcoming environment for members and the public. We value every member of our community. All members are expected to show respect and be welcoming, so that every participant can have an enjoyable and positive experience. Participation in-line with this Code of Conduct (CoC) removes any unnecessary challenges and promotes an inclusive culture.

We want all members of CVS and participants at our events to feel safe, secure and supported. Everyone should be able to work in a safe environment regardless of gender identity, expression, sexual orientation, disability, physical appearance, race, age, religion and/or socioeconomic background. We expect all members to uphold the principles of this CoC and act accordingly. Our CoC must be followed during participation in all events and meetings. We do not identify with or tolerate any forms of harassment or discrimination.

We expect all members to comply with the following:

  1. Professional Manner We aim for an intellectually stimulating and supportive space for all members. Science is made richer by discussion and constructive criticism, but that is no excuse for disrespectful behaviour. We expect all members to adopt a behaviour that is professional, curious, kind, and respectful. We expect all participants to behave in a safe and responsible manner, to be mindful of how their language and actions are perceived by others, and to treat all spaces and equipment with care and respect. Harassment or discriminatory (sexist, racist or exclusionary) comments are not appropriate.
  2. Inclusion All of CVS activities and communications should ensure inclusivity of people of different backgrounds and different accessibility needs, inline with the Equity, Diversity and Inclusivity policy (EDI).
  3. Harassment and Unacceptable Behaviour Harassment includes offensive or inappropriate verbal comments related to gender, sexual orientation, disability, physical appearance, body size, race, religion, sexual images in public spaces, deliberate intimidation, stalking, following, harassing photography or recording, sustained disruption of discussions, inappropriate physical contact and unwelcome sexual attention.
  4. Academic Misconduct Academic misconduct includes but is not limited to plagiarism, failure to recognize contribution of others, and fabrication or falsification of research data. It is not acceptable at any CVS events or meetings, or on our online platforms.
  5. Kindness Be kind to others. Make sure any criticism is constructive. Help to maintain a positive and approachable environment.
  6. Self-awareness Your actions can be harmful to others and create a negative environment – even if not the intended outcome. Listen. Offer a genuine apology, commit to learning and do better.
  7. Social Media We encourage engagement with CVS through our social media channels. Photography at events is allowed for personal and social media use unless indicated by the presenter or fellow participants. All behaviour regarding CVS, and any discussion of CVS events, on social media is covered by this CoC. Include appropriate credit (e.g. CVS, IAVCEI, name of presenter) for any images or intellectual content shared.

Reporting

If any issues are identified (e.g. unacceptable conduct, either within or outside the premises of in-person events, online) we encourage immediate reporting. Reports can be submitted by either the aggrieved person, or a witness to the unacceptable conduct. Please report to one of the co-leds of the commission, the secretary or the local representative either in person or by email to cvs-commission@cvs.iavceivolcano.org subject line CoC Reporting. We understand that reporting a traumatic event is difficult, and we are committed to listening fully and compassionately. All reported issues will be treated confidentially unless this breaches another parties rights.

Breaches of the CoC

Anyone who breaches the code of conduct is expected to immediately stop the inappropriate behaviour. Any member who violates this code of conduct may be asked to take corrective action, to leave the meeting/event, be asked not to attend further meetings or to resign from the commission.
